Your questions, answered
Everything you need to know about plug-in solar and the Solarfy kits. Still unsure? Ask us in the live chat (bottom right).
Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
Yes, in England, Scotland and Wales since 27 August 2026, for kits listed as compliant on the ENA register. The Solarfy Duo 910 is listed as SOLAW/21608. One kit per household, up to 800 W. Not yet permitted in Northern Ireland.
Do I need an electrician?
Not for most homes. You plug it into a suitable fixed wall socket. You’ll need an electrician if you need a new outdoor socket, or if your wiring is old and has no RCD protection.
Can I use an extension lead or adaptor?
No. The kit must plug directly into a fixed wall socket. That’s why we offer 5 m and 10 m solar cables instead.
How do I register it?
On myplugin.solar (free, run by the Energy Networks Association): confirm your email, enter your postcode, choose your kit, submit. It takes a few minutes; do it when you plug it in (within 28 days). Our guide walks you through it.
How much will I really save?
Around £100–£120 a year in a sunny, unshaded spot at today’s price cap, if you use 60–70% of the power at home (about 650 kWh a year). The government’s estimate for plug-in solar is £70–£110 a year. Shade, direction and when you use electricity make the difference.
What happens to power I don’t use?
It flows to the grid. Normally you’re not paid for it unless you have an eligible export tariff – so the Duo is sized to cover your daytime base load.
Does it work in winter or when it’s cloudy?
It still makes power in daylight, but much less. Most of the yearly output comes from March to September – setting up now means you’re ready for spring.
How big and heavy is it? Will it blow away?
Each panel is full-size: 1,762 × 1,134 × 30 mm and 22 kg (the Duo has two). That’s why two people deliver it – free. Set it up on the included flat mount and follow the mounting instructions in the manual to secure it against wind.
I rent – can I use it?
Yes, with your landlord’s or freeholder’s permission – we include a letter template. It’s not allowed on timber balconies or combustible cladding. When you move, unplug it and take it with you.
Should I tell my home insurer?
We recommend letting your insurer know about any new electrical equipment. The kit is ENA-registered and you register it with your network operator.
Can I add a battery or more panels?
Plug-in batteries aren’t permitted in the UK yet – join our waitlist and we’ll tell you when they are. The rules allow one plug-in kit per household. If you already have rooftop solar, check with your network operator first.
